Haydenfilms Hits A Home Run at 5th HollyShorts Film Festival in Hollywood

Hollywood, California—"My Turtle's Name is Dudley," a powerful short film about a woman sexually abused by her father, won the $10,000 Grand Prize for the Haydenfilms 4.0 Online Film Festival at an Awards Ceremony held on Aug. 7, 2009 during the 5th Annual HollyShorts Film Festival.

"This is the most successful film event in the history of both Haydenfilms LLC (www.haydenfilms.com) and the HollyShorts Film Festival (www.hollyshorts.com)," said Haydenfilms Founder and President Hayden Craddolph. "Obviously independent and student filmmakers from across the globe are seeing the power of short movies. There has been a tremendous explosion in the creation of and interest in them."

Haydenfilms, founded in 2001 by Craddolph in Kutztown, Pa., was a major sponsor and collaborator for this year's HollyShorts that ran from Aug. 6 to 13. A record 650 submissions of 30 minutes or less came from 25 countries.

The 17-minute Haydenfilms 4.0 Grand Prize film was written, directed and produced by aspiring director Johnny Gill, a graduate film student at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD). The other three 4.0 final films were "Babbage," directed by Claire Barker and produced by Trevor Hughes; "The Brass Teapot," directed and produced by Ramaa Mosley; and "Displaced," directed by Klaus Pas and produced by Klaus Pas and Guy Pas.

Presenting the grand prize to Gill was promising French Director Reda Mustafa, who not only won the grand prize for his "The Boot of War" in the Haydenfilms 3.0 Online Film Festival, but also won Best of Show for the 2009 ‘s HollyShorts with his 30-minute drama short, "La Petite Lillia."

Mustafa said he was deeply honored. "I would not have been at HollyShorts had it not been for my involvement with Haydenfilms. I have a great deal of respect for both of these organizations. I certainly plan to make more films and I will do whatever I can to work with Haydenfilms and HollyShorts. We share the same beliefs."

The HollyShorts opening night on Aug. 6 emceed by film critic Ben Lyons and held at the Directors Guild of America Theatre on Sunset Boulevard featured short films directed by Kirsten Dunst, Demi Moore, Carter Smith, David Prior and others; the presentation of the 2009 HollyShorts Spotlight Award to Cinematographer Darren Lew; and the presentation of the 2009 HollyShorts Indie Visionary Award by Craddolph to actor Eli Roth, currently appearing in "Inglorius Basterds."

At the Haydenfilms ceremony held on the 7th at the Laemmle 5 Theater on Sunset Boulevard—in addition to screening and presenting awards to the four 4.0 finalists—viewers had the opportunity to see the first U.S. screening of the director's cut of Roth's film "Cabin Fever."

HollyShorts co-founders Theo Dumont and Daniel Sol said they are extremely pleased with their 2009 event and feel it has grown into not only a tight community of independent filmmakers worldwide, but also recently ranked as one of MovieMaker Magazine's Top 25 Film Festivals worth the entry fee. Along with a strong domestic presence, the 5th annual HollyShorts Film Festival featured shorts, videos and webisodes from the international community, with 11 countries represented. Some 150 films made the final cut.

Haydenfilms--also an independent film production and distribution company--and HollyShorts are both devoted to showcasing the best and brightest short films from around the globe, advancing the careers of filmmakers through screenings, networking events, and various panel and forums.
